D-SHAKLE

D shackles are used every day – across a variety of different industries – for lifting, rigging, and connecting ropes and chains. They’re a common piece of industrial equipment. But before you use them for the first time, it’s important to do your research and learn how to handle them correctly. Here we offer a few top tips to get you started.

Select the correct dee shackle for the job

D shackles (also referred to as dee shackles) come in a diverse range of material grades, sizes, and styles. When in use, these factors can have a significant impact on the safety and efficacy of the shackle – and you need to think carefully about which shackle is right for your specific needs.

Here at Ropes Direct, we currently supply screw collar D-ring shackles, constructed from mild galvanized steel. These are regarded as ‘general purpose’. They come in a broad spectrum of sizes (ranging from 6mm-16mm) and they are a safe, ideal option for many industrial lifting applications.

Get to know your dee shackle

It may seem obvious, but you should never attempt to use a D shackle unless you understand how it works. Dee shackles are designed to lift heavy weights. By using them incorrectly, you could accidentally cause damage (to both the shackle and its load) and pose a risk to your safety.

Try to familiarise yourself with the shackle as much as possible. Perhaps do a practice run with a light load or contact an industry expert for additional information. Ropes Direct has excellent knowledge in this area and our specialists are happy to advise on the best way to handle your new lifting device.

Attach the load carefully

Dee shackles are intended for straight in-line lifting. This is why it’s important to position the load correctly. Its center line needs to coincide perfectly with the center line of the shackle’s body – therefore avoiding a side bending load and improving the overall efficacy of the equipment. You should also carefully check the pin, making sure it is screwed tightly into the shackle eye.

Inspect the dee shackle regularly

D-ring shackles don’t need a lot of maintenance, but keeping them clean can help to prolong their lifespan. You should also inspect them regularly for defects. Faulty dee shackles can be a health and safety hazard. If any issues are found – such as general wear and tear or damage to the shackle pin and body – it’s worth contacting a supplier and getting a replacement as soon as possible.
